German: habitational name from any of the places called Thune (in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia) or Thun (in Switzerland). Swedish: from thun an ornamental (old) spelling of tun ‘(grass grown) enclosed yard’ (from Old Norse tún a common element of placenames) mostly an ornamental adoption but possibly in some instances a topographic name taken by someone who lived by such an enclosure or yard.
