Japanese: written 戸田 ‘door’ and ‘rice paddy’. It is found predominantly in eastern Japan. Bearers are said to be descended from the northern Fujiwara clan. Japanese (Tōda): written 遠田 ‘far rice paddy’ or 東田 ‘eastern rice paddy’. The first is also pronounced Enda and found in eastern Japan. The second is also pronounced Higashida and found in western Japan. Catalan: possibly from the ancient female personal name Tota probably of Visigothic origin (with the element thiuda ‘people’).
