English: topographic name from toll ‘clump of trees’, a dialect term of Kent, Sussex, and Hampshire. German: nickname from Middle High German tol, dol ‘foolish’, also ‘pretty’ or ‘handsome’. German: from a reduced form of the personal name Bartholomäus (see Bartholomew).
