Altered spelling of German Duller, a nickname for someone who was patient, from an agent derivative of Middle High German dult ‘patience’; or a habitational name for someone from Dullen in Württemberg; or from an agent derivative of Middle High German tult ‘fair’, ‘festival’ (Bavarian Dult), probably denoting someone who performed or peddled his wares at such events; or (in southern Germany) from a topographic name from Tull ‘elevation’, ‘knoll’.
