Slovenian (eastern Slovenia; Vaš): from a reduced and altered form of the personal name Sebastjan (see Sebastian). Compare Bas. Dutch: from a short form of the personal name Servaas, from Latin Servatus. St. Servaas was a bishop of Maastricht and its patron saint.
