Italian: of uncertain derivation. Caracausi proposes a derivation from Sicilian vota ‘turning’, ‘bend’ or from medieval Latin vota ‘vault’, ‘vaulted room’. The surname, however, belongs to the northwest (Liguria and Piedmont), which throws doubt on the first suggestion at least.
