The Worcestershire placename may derive from a lost stream-name (of uncertain origin) or Old English weorf ‘cattle’ + lēah. The Yorkshire placename probably derives from the Old English personal name Wērlāf + Old English lēah. The Devon placename probably derives from Old English weard ‘watch’ + lēah. There may have been some confusion with Worley and Whaley .
