German (of Slavic origin) and Jewish (Ashkenazic): nickname or metonymic occupational name from a Germanized Slavic word meaning ‘black’ (compare 3 and Cerny ) or ‘grain’ (compare Zern ). Germanized form of Sorbian Čorn (or perhaps by shortening of some other surname beginning with Čorn-): nickname derived from Upper Sorbian čorny ‘black’. Slovenian: probably a nickname from an old spelling of zoren ‘early morning’ also ‘fresh’. It is also possible but less likely that the name is of German origin (see 1 above compare Corn ).
