First School House Historical Marker Image ID Number H00824 Date 1925-08-01 Description -This marker, placed on the Pioneer Cabin (Auntie Stone's Cabin), on Aug. 1, 1925, was to commemorate the first school and school teacher, Mrs. Elizabeth P. Stratton, in the Cache La Poudre Valley. Mrs. Stratton was Elizabeth Stone's niece and she held school in this cabin. The cabin, now located at the Library Park as part of the Fort Collins Museum, was originally located at 214 Mason Street. It is the one remaining structure dating back to 1864 when soldiers were stationed at Fort Collins. The Pioneer Cabin was the first citizen's dwelling (Auntie Elizabeth Stone), then was used as the first hotel and then as the town's first school.
