About Germany, Military and Marine Weekly Publications, 1816-1942

After humiliating defeats in the Napoleonic Wars, the Prussian Army—and later the combined Imperial German Army—retooled to become one of the most formidable fighting forces in Europe for more than a century. The military periodicals featured in this database served to both inform and educate members of the German armed forces, and they can be a useful resource for researches with male German ancestors who lived during this time period. As official military news channels, they printed army and wartime news; notices of appointments, promotions, awards, retirements, deaths, and the like; and articles on tactics, history, organization, combat, weaponry, and other topics of interest. The location field will return search results for the city where content was published. To search for a location name, enter it in the keyword field.

The Militärisches Wochenblatt (Military Weekly) began publication in 1816 for the Prussian Army and later served as a national publication for the German Imperial Army. The Königlich-Württembergisches Militär-Verordnungsblatt (Royal Württemberg Military Gazette) and the Militär Verordnungsblatt des Königreichs Sachsen (Military Gazette of the Kingdom of Saxony) served the armies of Württemburg and Saxony, respectively. Selections from Königlich-Württembergisches Militär-Verordnungsblatt in this database include only the Personalnachrichten (staff news), and some years and individual issues are missing from each of these collections.
