New York Marble Cemetery Records, New York City, NY, 1830-1937

The oldest extant non-sectarian cemetery in New York City, the New York Marble Cemetery was designed in 1830 with solid marble vaults built completely underground for health reasons. This database includes the names of all 2,090 persons who were buried there. The Cemetery has never had headstones, but its registers are extant. Each individual record here provides the decedent's name, vault number, and burial date. After 1840, about a third of the burials were removed to the newly- popular rural cemeteries such as Green-Wood. All known removals and reinterments are noted in the "Comment" field, though there may be more removals that the Cemetery failed to record. The families that purchased vaults in the cemetery were important to the dynamic commercial, social, and cultural life of New York in the early- and mid-nineteenth century. For researchers of well-to-do New York City ancestors, this can be a helpful source of information.

An additional 400 entries for maiden names have been added and are denoted m.n. Years of birth (b = born; c = born circa; bp = baptized) are derived from age at death or from secondary sources and are provided solely as a guideline. The Cemetery should not be cited as a source for dates of birth or for any data other than burial date.
