Harney County, Oregon, U.S., Cemetery Records

Located in the southeast portion of Oregon, the three counties of Harney, Lake, and Malheur comprise much of the sparsely populated portion of the state through which many of the migration trails existed. This database seeks to illuminate many of those who were buried in Harney County with a few from Lake and Malheur counties between 1881 and 1970. It includes obituaries taken from Burns Times Herald between 1964 and 1970. Information provided includes the name of the deceased, birth and death dates and burial location; relationships, survivors, and family information are provided for many. With over 4,600 names in a land area much larger than Massachusetts, this collection represents some of the early settlers' families who traveled through or remained in this area and provides clues for the researcher to extend families and ancestry.

Not all known cemeteries are included for Harney County, Oregon. Some not listed include the grave on the Center Patrol Road marked by a stone placed there by the Harney County Genealogical Society; the Old Indian Cemetery west of Burns Cemetery, and the New Indian Cemetery just north of Burns, Oregon. Obvious Indian burial grounds and many unmarked graves exist in the forested and prairie areas of the county. Due to great distance, other cemeteries including Andrews, Denio, and Fields cemeteries were missed. This record compiles the cemetery project of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from the 1950s and 1960s under the direction of Mrs. Guy W. (Larue P.) Leslie.
