About Grevesmühlen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany, Deaths, 1876-1950

This is a collection of death records from Grevesmühlen and the communities of Diedrichshagen, Friedrichshagen, Roggenstorf, and Bössow.

Dating back to the 13th century, Grevesmühlen is one of the oldest towns in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, lying near the coast of the Baltic Sea in an area surrounded by lakes, woods, and plains. Following the unification of Germany in 1871, civil registration began in 1876 in Mecklenburg.

These records use a standard form that typically includes the following details:

  • certificate number
  • place and date of registration
  • witness, how known, and residence
  • name of decedent (often with occupation and other details)
  • decedent’s age, religion, and residence
  • decedent’s birthplace, gender, parents’ names, and residence
  • death date

Some death records might be stricken through, which means they are invalid, i.e. the event did not occur. The implication is that a person might not have died, or that the recorder made an error in transcription.
