About this collection

This collection contains an index of names found in parish registers and other historical sources from numerous Protestant communities that are today part of the German state of Saxony. The oldest church records in this collection date from the 16th century.

The collection primarily covers the south-west part of Saxony including Vogtland and the Ore Mountains. It includes records from the cities of Zwickau und Plauen and numerous other communities. Historically, these were located within shifting territorial boundaries. Many belonged to the Kingdom of Saxony from 1806 to 1918.

What you can find in the records

This collection is an index to the names found in the parish records and in other historical sources. The records primarily contain information about births and baptisms, marriages, and deaths and burials. Images of the records themselves are not included. The following details may be found:

  • Last Name, Given Names
  • Event Type (Birth, Baptism, Marriage, Death, Burial)
  • Event Date
  • Event Place, Community
  • Relatives (usually Parents or Children)

The indexed records are based on older microfilms of the holdings of the Chemnitz city archives (between 1953-1990, the Stadtarchiv Karl-Marx-Stadt). Search for names or dates using the search form.
