About Iowa, U.S., Births (series) 1880-1904, 1921-1944 and Delayed Births (series), 1856-1940

This database combines databases from two series of Iowa Birth Records from the State Historical Society of Iowa, State Archives. RG 48 Public Health, Vital Statistics:

1). Births (series), 1880-1904, 1921-1944.
Following the creation of the State Department of Health, Iowa began recording births, deaths and marriages on July 1, 1880. This series includes:

Births (and Stillbirths), 1880- June 1904. Births are recorded in registers bound by year into ledgers and arranged by county. Information includes: child's name, gender, and date and place of birth; father's full name and mother's full name. Some years include additional information such as father's age, occupation and place of birth and mother's age and place of birth. Registers also include stillbirths generally recorded at the end of year.
Births, July 1921-1944. In 1904, the state began using the certificate format to record births which are arranged by county and then by year. Basic information includes: child's name, gender, and date and place of birth; father's name and place of birth and mother’s name and place of birth. Additional information may also be entered. When the certificates from July 1921 to 1944 were digitized, all stillbirths were closed by Iowa Code, thus stillbirths are not included in the online Births from 1921 to 1944.

2). Delayed Births (series), ca. 1856-1940
In 1924, Iowa began recording Delayed Births for previously unrecorded births. More than 250,000 pre-1900 births are among the births included in this series. The Delayed Births were filed using two different formats (a delayed birth certificate or a birth certificate - affidavit). Basic information entered for both formats includes: child’s name, date and birthplace, gender, and parents’ names; additional information may also be provided.
