About Elizabethan Ipswich Town Finances

This database contains a selection of accounts of the treasurers and chamberlains of the city of Ipswich from 1559 to 1602. Primarily it is a list of payments including to whom the payment was made, how much the payment was, and what the payment was for. These documents can be useful to historians because of "the light that they throw on the resources and revenues available to the town governors and the way that they chose to make use of them, additionally, in the range and diversity of their entries, are a rich quarry for the student of the Elizabethan provincial social scene" (Taken from the Preface, vii). Researchers with ancestors from Ipswich may find this database especially important as they may find their ancestors involved in the accounts and finances of the city.
