About Gurs, France, Deportations to Auschwitz-Birkenau, 1942-1943

Located in the South of France, the Gurs Internment Camp was the largest in the area and became the home of Jews from France, Baden in Germany, and other Jewish refugees from central Europe after the Statute on Jews was issued in October 1940. Beginning in August 1942 and continuing until March 1943, six convoys took thousands of internees from Gurs to the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. Originally published in the Aufbau Newspaper, the records in this collection contain the names and former residence of some of those deported.
