Church Histories & Records

Collection Information

Congregational histories can reveal significant details about your ancestor's religious community. They may even contain records of christenings, marriages, and burials/deaths. Founding and long-standing families may be mentioned, including biographical details, and the work and member lists of charitable groups affiliated with the congregation can give you a look at the role your ancestor played in his community.

Church histories, centennial books, and meeting minutes may contain the names of congregation members, and possibly even records of baptisms, marriages, and deaths.

Search Tips

  • There are many collections in this category, so the best way to locate your ancestor’s congregation is through the Card Catalog. Use the location filters, or enter the church name in the keyword field.
  • If you can’t locate your ancestor by name in this collection, look for the names of clergy found in marriage and other records you’ve found for your ancestor. Search for those names to learn more about the congregation.
