from Middle English furs firs fers ‘furze furze-covered land’ (Old English fyrs) + man ‘man’. As with Bridgeman and other such compounds it is presumably either an occupational name for a furze cutter (see Furzer ) or locative for one who lived by furzeland or at a place called Furze (see Furze ).
