French (Guité): from the ancient Germanic personal name Wido (see Guy ). This surname is virtually non-existing in France. English (Yorkshire): variant of Gyte perhaps a topographic name from the River Goyt (Derbyshire) early recorded as Guyt Guyot and Gouyt. The Goyt valley is not far from Chelmorton in Derbyshire where the modern surname has had a long history since at least the 17th century.
