Americanized form of Finnish Huuska: probably from huuska ‘openhanded spender’ or perhaps from the Karelian-Russian male personal names Guska and Guška pet forms of names containing the syllable gus or a syllable beginning with g- especially Sergey Igor and Avgust. Recorded as a surname since the 17th century in the Karelian Isthmus.
