Finnish: habitational name from farms so named from koivu ‘birch tree’ + the locative or collective suffix -sto thus referring to ‘birch wood or forest’. Established as a surname since the 19th century in western central and southern Finland and also adopted in the early 20th century as an ornamental name mainly to replace Swedish surnames.
