Irish (Derry) and Scottish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Cailín or Mac Caileain ‘son of Cailín or Caileán’ a personal name that is either a variant of Colin or a derivative of coileán ‘puppy’. Mac Cailein the designation of the chief of Clann Campbell was quoted in Ireland as both Mac Cailín and Mac Ailín and appears to have become a gallowglass surname.
