Poche Family History
Poche Name Meaning
French: from Old French puche ‘purse bag’ (a word of ancient Germanic origin) used as a metonymic occupational name for a maker of bags and purses or a nickname for someone who was in the habit of carrying a distinctive bag or purse. In the Middle Ages this was a universal personal accessory as clothing with pockets was unknown. French (Poché): variant of Pochet from Old French pochet ‘small bag’ used as a nickname for a maker or seller (compare 1 above). In the US this surname (in any of the two possible senses; see also 1 above) is found mainly in LA. Hispanic (Dominican Republic): altered form of French Pochet (see 2 above).
