If anyone should happen across a photo of the Sultana's First Engineering Officer Nathaniel Wintringer, you would certainly be a godsend to me. He was one of my ancesters and he survived the nightmare of the Sultana and went on to Captain a couple of other Packet ships. A picture of him would lok good on my wall and family tree.

Hi Herb,

The Names of the other packet ships that Captain Nathan Winteringer Captained or co-captained were:
the Forest City, a stern wheel packet, wood hull, built in 1865.purchased in 1867 by Capt. B.W. Doyle, Capt. Abner O'Neal and Nathan Winteringer. Then the C. W. Batchelor, which was also a sternwheel packet, and also with a wood hull.built in 1879. She was built for Capt. Abner O'Neal and Capt. Nate Winteringer.
The last sternwheeler owned by Capt.Nate Wintringer and Capt. George O'Neal, was the Abner O'Neal. She was one of the best constructed and fastest boats on the upper Ohio.
There is a book about packet ships which mentions all of these but I cant recall the name of it right now.I think I bought it at one of the major book stores. I have it packed away somewhere.
Thanks again for those pictures.
David

Hello- I was following this thread and am curious if this Nate/Nathan Wintringer maybe connected to my Wintringer line and if so, how.
My Gr-gr-grandpa, John Wintringer came from Luxemburg to the US in 1874. He came to Quebec, Canada via Antwerp, Belgium and Liverpool, England. He then worked in a copper mine in Michigan for 3 years. He then went to IA, where he had a sister in Cascade, IA. Most of his descendants are still in the Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas.
John married Barbara Rink in Cascade, IA in 1883. they had 6 children: Magdalene, Amelia, Margaret, John, Peter and Mary. John's parents were Peter and Johannes (Lemrose) Wintringer.
Do any of these people match with Nate/Nathan Wintringer?
Thank you for any help- Kathy

I realize this is 13 years after your inquiry, but in case you are still wondering, Nathan Wintringer's family arrived from Germany in the early 1800's, so any connection would have to be before that.
