In Spain the precise meaning of the term varies from language to language: in Catalonia it denotes a farmyard, in Asturies an unfenced field, and in Galicia cortiña means ‘vegetable garden’. In Asturies the name can also be habitational, from any of numerous minor places named with this word, as for example La Cortina. Italian: from a feminine diminutive of corto ‘small’.
