Hunton Family History
Hunton Name Meaning
English: habitational name from places so called in North Yorkshire, Hampshire, and Kent. The Yorkshire place is named from the Old English personal name Huna + tun ‘enclosure’, ‘settlement’; that in Hampshire from the genitive plural of hund ‘hound’ + tun ‘enclosure’, ‘settlement’; and the Kentish place from Old English huntena, genitive plural of hunta ‘hunter’ + dun ‘hill’. The present-day distribution shows clusters in North and South Yorkshire, and also in Norfolk.
