Finnish: habitational name from farms so named from the personal name Lauri from Latin Laurentius (see Lawrence ). Established as a hereditary surname in western and northern Finland at the latest since the 19th century. The surname Lauri is also established in Estonia. In North America it may in some cases be a shortened form of Laurila .
