Japanese: written 牧野 ‘pasture field’. It is found mostly in central Japan and the Ryūkyū Islands. A noble family claiming descent from legendary statesman Takenouchi no Sukune (see Takeuchi ) bore the name; they resided in Mikawa (now part of Aichi prefecture).
