Germanized and perhaps also an Americanized form of Slovenian Mulej: nickname for someone who was born out of wedlock from a dialect form of mulec ‘bastard’ Alternatively it may be a homonymic derivative of mula ‘sulk’ denoting someone who is habitually in the pouts.
