Dutch: variant of Horn. Americanized form of Norwegian Øren, a habitational name from any of about thirty farmsteads, mainly on the west coast of Norway, named Øyra, from Old Norse eyrr ‘delta’, ‘sandbank’. Americanized spelling of German Ohren. Jewish (Israeli): ornamental name from Hebrew oren ‘pine tree’. In some cases it may be a substitute for some original Ashkenazic name of similar sound or meaning, e.g. Tannenbaum or Sosna.
