Probably an Americanized form of North German Uthoff, a topographic or habitational name for someone living or working at an outlying farm, from Middle Low German ut ‘out’, ‘away’ + hove ‘farmstead’. Americanized form of Dutch Outhof, a topographic or habitational name, from oude hove ‘old farm’.
