German: nickname from Middle High German stumpf ‘maimed mutilated’ for an invalid. Slovenian and Czech (Štumpf): nickname for a short stout man of German origin (see 1 above). In North America this surname may also be a Germanized form of the Slovenian variants Štumf and Štunf.
