German: from an Old High German personal name composed of the elements wīg ‘battle war’ + heri ‘army’. English (southeastern): topographic or occupational name from Middle English wiker denoting someone who lived or worked in an outlying settlement (from Middle English wik(e) Old English wīc; see Wick ). The formation of topographic names with the suffix -er is typical of the Middle English dialects of Sussex Surrey and Hampshire.
