About Early Connecticut Marriages

This database contains names, dates, and places extracted from early Connecticut marriage records.

Reverend Frederick W. Bailey published the first volume of Early Connecticut Marriages in 1896. Over time, the series would grow to seven volumes. Each entry lists marriage details from original records, mainly from Congregational and Episcopal churches of the period 1651–1800. Bailey’s work records about 30,000 marriages, arranged by town and thereafter by church. They include some of the earliest marriage records for Connecticut.

Each record lists

  • bride
  • groom
  • marriage place
  • marriage date

Note that there are some gaps in this collection, and it is not a comprehensive list of all Connecticut marriages for the period. While the majority of these records occur from 1651 to 1800, there may be some marriages that occurred outside this year range.
