Ukrainian, Rusyn, Serbian, and Croatian: nickname from barna, a loanword from Hungarian denoting an ox (in Serbian and Croatian also a horse) of dark reddish brown or dark gray color, or a surname of direct Hungarian origin (see 1 above).
Italian: from the ancient Germanic personal name Barna or possibly from a short form of the personal name Barnaba (see Barnaby).
