from Bremridge in South Molton (Devon) which is recorded as Bramelrugg in 1220 and Bremelrygg' in 1334 or from any of five other places so named in Torbryan Atherington Sandford Bampton and Hatherleigh (all Devon). Most of these place-names derive from Old English brēmel ‘bramble’ + hrycg ‘ridge’.

The etymology of Bremridge in Hatherleigh is uncertain; it is recorded as Bromeridge alias Bremeridge in 1551 and the first element may be either Old English brēmel or brōm ‘broom’.
