German (also Brücker): topographic name for someone who lived near a bridge or an occupational name for a bridge keeper or toll collector on a bridge (see Bruck) or a habitational name for someone from any of numerous places in southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland named Bruck or Brugg (compare Brugger). Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): occupational name either from a Yiddishized form of Polish brukarz ‘paver’ or from an agent noun based on Yiddish bruk ‘pavement’.
