Cammell Family History
Cammell Surname Meaning
from Norman French came(i)l ‘camel’ (Latin camelus classical Greek kamēlos). In the 1332 example this is clearly a nickname possibly denoting a clumsy or ill-tempered person as in 'Achilles? A drayman a porter a very camel' (Shakespeare: Troilus and Cressida I ii 249).
The other forms could alternatively belong at (2) below. from Queen Camel or West Camel (Somerset).
there has also been some confusion with Campbell sometimes pronounced as Camel.
