from Charleroi now in Hainault Belgium. This city was founded in 1666 when the Netherlands were under Spanish rule and is named after Charles II king of Spain (Charles-Roy).

It was in French hands 1693–8 and 1714–45. The surname must have been adopted by or foisted on Black slaves in the French West Indies during one of these periods mainly on Saint Lucia and Martinique.
