Americanized form of the Polish habitational name Czerniecki and possibly also of Czech or Slovak Černický Černecký derived from placenames formed with Polish czarny Czech černý Slovak čierny ‘black dark’ e.g. Czerniec in Lesser Poland Voivodeship or one of the villages called Czernica or Czernice (now in Ukraine).

Americanized form of the Polish habitational name Czerniewski derived from a placename Czerniewo which refers to several villages in Pomeranian (in particular) and Masovian voivodeships and in Ukraine.
