Coulsey Family History

Coulsey Surname Meaning

from a Middle English personal name *Colsy. It may represent an Anglo-Scandinavian *Colsige (Old Scandinavian Kol- ‘black swarthy’ + Old English sige ‘victory’) possibly attested in Colsege (1086) unless it is a scribal miscopying of Anglo-Scandinavian Colswegen (for Colswein see Coulson).

Alternatively later examples of Colsy might be genuine reduced forms of Colswein with loss of final -n. perhaps in some cases a variant of Cawsey.
