Grof Family History
Grof Surname Meaning
Hungarian (Gróf); Slovak (mainly Gróf); Czech (also Gróf); Slovenian and Croatian: status name from Hungarian and Slovak gróf.
South Slavic grof means ‘count’ and is, in most cases, probably applied as a metonymic occupational or status name for someone in the service of a count or for the farmer on a land belonging to a count.
It may have also been applied as an ironic nickname. Compare Graf and Groff.
