From Hampnett (Gloucs), which is recorded as Hantone in 1081 and Hamtonett in the 13th century. East Hampnett (Sussex) is recorded as Antone in 1086, and Westhampnett (Sussex) is recorded as Hentone in 1086.

The places take their names from an earlier place-name derived from Old English hēah ‘high’ (dative hēan) + tūn ‘farmstead estate’ with the addition of the French diminutive suffix -et.
