Hoby Surname Meaning
See Hobby. Perhaps from Hoby (Leics) which is recorded as Hobie in 1086 or Huby (in Sutton on the Forest NR Yorks) which is recorded as Hobi in 1086.
The place-names derive from Old English hōh ‘heel spur of land’ + Old Scandinavian bȳ ‘farmstead village’. It is uncertain that this surname has survived.
Its regular modern pronunciation would be /həubi/ but compare Huby.
