Hudsmith Family History

Hudsmith Surname Meaning

From the Middle English personal name Hudde (a pet form of Hugh, see Hudd) + Middle English maugh / mough meaning ‘kinsman by marriage, brother-in-law, son-in-law’. Compare Watmough and Cuthbert Hodgemaght Hodgemaughthe 1545–6 in Norwich Wills (see Hodge).

In this context, the final -gh is alternatively pronounced as -th, as seen in names like Huddesmawth (1464). The genitival form Huddesmauth or *Huddesmouth underwent alteration to Hudsmith through folk etymology.
