Germanized form of Polish Jeleń Slovenian and Czech Jelen Slovak Jeleň all meaning ‘(deer) stag’. In part it is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar) apparently as a translation of German Hirsch or of its Gottscheerish variant Hiris into Slovenian.
