German, Dutch, and African (mainly Tanzania, also e.g. South Africa): from the Latin personal name Julius, originally an aristocratic Roman surname made famous by Julius Caesar, the first Roman emperor.

The personal name was borne in the Middle Ages by various minor Christian saints and was nearly as popular as its derivative Julianus (see Julian).
