The Shrops place-name is recorded as Kinardeseia in 1223, Kynardesheye in 1256, and Kynardesleye in 1291–2. It derives from the Old English personal name Cyneheard + Old English ēg ‘island’, alternating with (ge)hæg ‘enclosure’ and lēah.
