The Worcs and Herefs place-names derive from the Old English personal name Cyneheard + Old English lēah ‘wood, woodland clearing’. The Surrey place-name, which is recorded as Kinewardeslee in 1255, derives from the Old English personal name Cyneweard + Old English lēah.

The Shrops place-name is recorded as Kinardeseia in 1223, Kynardesheye in 1256, and Kynardesleye in 1291–2. It derives from the Old English personal name Cyneheard + Old English ēg ‘island’, alternating with (ge)hæg ‘enclosure’ and lēah.
