Lowick Family History

from Lowick (Northants) which is recorded as Lufuuich about 1137. The place-name may derive from the Old English personal name Luha + Old English wīc ‘dwelling specialized farmstead’. Occasionally from Lowick (Lancs) which is recorded as Lofwic and Laufwik in medieval documents or Lowick (Northumb) which is recorded as Lowic and Louwyk in the 13th century.

The Lancs place-name probably derives from Old Scandinavian lauf ‘leaf foliage’ + vík ‘small creek inlet bay’. The Northumb place takes its name from the river Low (from Old English luh ‘lake pool’) + Old English wīc ‘dwelling specialized farmstead’.
